Biography

Perhaps the most succinct, well researched and documented source for Joseph Lockwood, is found in Hodge's Some Descendants of Edmund Lockwood (1594-1635) of Cambridge, Massachusetts and his son Edmund Lockwood (c. 1625-1693) of Stamford, Connecticut.[1]

[p 11] The children of Edmund2 and Hannah (Scott) Lockwood were: . . .
JOSEPH LOCKWOOD, b. 1666, 1/m. 19 May 1698 at Stamford (V) ELIZABETH AYRES (AYERS); 2/m. 10 August 1716 at Stamford (V) MARGERY WEBB; 3/m. by 1740 SUSANNAH _______.
[In the probate records of Edmund Lockwood, there is an inventory dated 28 Feb 1692/3 which names the children of Edmund with their ages: Joseph, 22; Daniel 19; Edmund & Mary, 14; Abigail, 17, and Sarah 11. Probate Record This puts Joseph's birth 1670 or 1671).] [pp 13-16] JOSEPH3 LOCKWOOD, s/o Edmund2 (Edmund1) and Hannah (Scott) Lockwood, was “born in Stamford in the year 1666, came to Poundridge in the spring of 1743 and died 1750; was interred in the Old Burial ground, aged 84.” according to the journal of his great-grandson, Ezra Lockwood, p. 16. The journal continues: “left issue by his first wife (Ayres) four sons and three daughters, viz: Joseph, John, Israel, Hannah, Elizabeth, Mary and Reuben—and by his second wife (Webb) Nathaniel and James.”
Ezra6 Lockwood (Ebenezer5, Joseph4, Joseph3) wrote his journal in the late 1840’s and early 1850’s and had a hazy and erroneous version of his immigrant ancestry. Ezra’s uncle, Joseph5 Lockwood (Joseph4, Joseph3) (1731-1793) knew better, for on 26 July 1765 he, of Old Pound Ridge, N.Y., conveyed to Jonathan Scofield, 3rd of Stamford “16-0-0 in said property, part of right of Edmund and John Lockwood which descended to my grandfather Joseph Lockwood” (Stamford, Ct. deed G:404).
Joseph3 Lockwood 1/m. 19 May 1698 at Stamford (V) ELIZABETH AYRES, b. probably d/o Richard Ayres of Bedford, N. Y. She d. 16 December 1715 at Stamford (V) apparently in childbirth.
Joseph 2/m. 10 August 1716 (V—with error, 1715) at Stamford MARGERY WEBB, b. 4 October 1683, d. 2 January 1736/7 at Stamford (V), d/o Joseph and Hannah (Scofield) Webb.
Joseph 3/m. before 1740 SUSANNAH _______, Who was living in January 1742 (Stamford deeds D:188, D:191 & D:293, cited below).
Joseph was named in the probate records of his father and mother, Edmund and Hannah Lockwood in 1693 and 1707; and was administrator of his father’s estate in 1693, indicating that he had certainly attained his majority by that year. He and his brothers, Edmund and Daniel Lockwood 30 March 1734 appear on the list of freemen at Stamford (S). Joseph was named in the will of his brother, Edmund, 8 January 1739/40. No probate record for Joseph3 Lockwood can be found at either Stamford or Pound Ridge, N.Y., but there are numbers of deeds from Joseph to his children. The daughters Hannah and Elizabeth perhaps received their portions in movables at the time of marriage. Abstracts of Stamford, Ct. deeds: . . .

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

Lockwood-1487 and Lockwood-28 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth information, same death information, same wife Elizabeth Ayres.

I removed the wives that are also on Lockwood-1487.

I think this profile is being confused with Lockwood-1487. The wives belong to Lockwood-1487. My reference is Descendants of Robert Lockwood: Colonial and Revolutionary history of the Lockwood family in America, from A.D. 1630.

Lockwood-1748 and Lockwood-1487 appear to represent the same person because: They share a lot of details.

I'm confused. I thought his father was Joseph Lockwood Senior (Lockwood-19) and his grandfather was Robert Lockwood (Lockwood-16). I understand there are implications and there is, indeed, confusion resulting from "An Atrocious Lockwood Blunder", but is this definitely correct? I had understood Edmund Lockwood (Lockwood-15) to have no surviving children and never heard of Edmund Lockwood (Lockwood-205) til today.
